Barry James is accused of murdering his 70-year-old grandmother. Authorities say he had just been released from jail in early March, for punching a man in the face.
Thursday, James was arrested in connection with his grandmother’s murder. The dead body of Joyce Spears was found wrapped up in carpet. A dead cat was wrapped inside with her.
Police say the elderly woman’s body had been placed next to the trash outside, ready for garbage pick-up outside his apartment building in Crown Heights.
The 32-year-old accused killer admitted that he’d murdered his grandmother by stabbing her with a knife and beating her with a dumbbell.
According to police sources, he claims she practiced voodoo and had become possessed by demons. When asked why he killed a cat inside his Brooklyn apartment, James told police the cat was also possessed.
The cat was found with the grandmother’s body when the blankets around her were unwrapped.
James has a history of psychiatric issues and was released on his own recognizance by Brooklyn Criminal Judge Marguerite Dougherty on March 10 for punching a man in the face.
James is currently hospitalized and is pending arraignment for murder charges in Brooklyn Criminal Court.
