Eight years ago, Joseph Hagerman beheaded his five-year-old son.
In 2009, Hagerman decapitated Joshua Hagerman, his 5-year-old son while putting away his toys.
He also injured his wife, Shirley Hagerman, as she tried to wrestle the knife away as he cut off the head of the helpless boy.
If I didn’t take my son’s life, he would have lost his eternal salvation.
— Joseph Hagerman
Now, after only 8 years in confinement, Hagerman is being released back into the community.
We’re just happy that it’s over with and that he’s been given a second chance,” his sister, Maria Teresa Lancaster, said on her way out of the courthouse. “My brother didn’t do it out of malice. He’s mentally ill. When he’s medicated, he’s fine and stable.

Many feel that this is not a good outcome to a horrific crime against a helpless child and wonder how society is benefited by releasing a person capable of such a crime.
