Carlos Alberto Amarillo, 48, of Queens, was found guilty of murder this week after he was arrested for the gristly murder of his then-girlfriend and her daughter. He told the court that he killed them because they were witches and putting spells on him.
Estrella Castaneda, 56, and Lina Castaneda, 25, were found brutally beaten in their home two years ago in January. Police walked in on a sick scene, as Amarillo used a work hammer to kill them both. They were found bloody and beaten.
According to trial testimony, Estrella was found “face up on the bed with a pillow over her face,” Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.
The Daily Mail reports:
Brown said Lina’s body was found in the rear bedroom ‘face down with injuries to her head and a hammer was on the floor beside her’.
He said her seven-year-old daughter was found unharmed on the bed in her mother’s room.
Amarillo called 911 stating that ‘two females are dead, they were assassinated, hurry they are dead. ‘
He added: ‘I killed them because they are witches, I want the police to kill me. I killed them with a hammer.’
When police arrived, Amarillo was holding a Bible and told the officers the women were ‘witches and were performing voodoo and casting spells’ on him that made him sick, Brown said.
Neighbour Camilo Alvarez, 23 at the time, lives two doors down from the scene of the crime but was still able to hear with chilling clarity as the frenzied Amarillo attacked the two women.
‘He was swinging the hammer hard,’ Alvarez said. ‘It was a good minute, two minutes.’
NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton called the senseless crime an ‘extraordinarily sad circumstance where a couple of innocents were killed’.
Amarillo, reportedly a construction worker, faces up to life in prison with the possibility of parole when he is sentenced July 6.
A message left with Amarillo’s lawyer wasn’t immediately returned.
