Chicago has taken measures to install an ID program designed to protect illegal immigrants. The municipal identification program will stymie the Trump administration’s attempts to crack down on sanctuary cities. The city is following New York and San Fransisco’s lead with the IDs, which will let illegal immigrants use Chicago’s city services.
City Clerk Anna Valencia and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel (a former Obama staffer) have moved to protect information on municipal IDs which could be sensitive to illegal immigrants who live there.
The Daily Caller reports:
According to The Sun Times, Emanuel and Valencia wanted to put out assurances that the city will only inquire about applicants about immigration status. Additionally, the city will not keep copies of applicants’ personal information.
“It’s going to capture just the name and the date of birth. It’s not going to capture an address,” a source revealed. “Applicants will also be able to self-designate their gender, which will be huge to the transgender and LGBTQ community. And it’s not just for undocumented individuals. It’s for people with disabilities and people who are homeless or victims of domestic violence.”
Emanuel insisted that Chicago would remain a sanctuary city, despite protests from the federal government.
