A high-school teacher has been fired by his Illinois school district after admonishing a student for not standing at attention to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, reported Heat Street today.
Vince Ziebarth, a driver’s education teacher, confronted 15 year-old Shemar Cooper more than once after Cooper refused to stand up for the Pledge. The first incident reportedly took place in September of last year.
As a final ultimatum, Ziebarth told Cooper he would quit teaching him how to drive if he did not stand for the Pledge. A few weeks later, Blue Island’s District 218 decided to fire him.
Cooper’s family supports his First Amendment right not to stand for the Pledge, but the firing has caused a storm of controversy at the school with my students and families petitioning for Ziebarth to be reinstated.
