A captain at Rikers Island prison is charged with attempting to help a prisoner hide her tattoo. Captain Shantay Dash has now resigned, after a video was released showing her in an intimate kiss with an inmate.
On the video, Dash can be seen talking to an unnamed prisoner at Rikers. At some point, she appears to move in for a kiss. After the kiss is over, the prison captain is heard saying:
“What the heck?”
The incriminating video was first reported by PIX11 News. It had been posted on a Facebook group for former and current New York City Correction Department employees.
It appears that the video was captured with a cell phone. Since these gadgets are not allowed inside city jails, some are also wondering where the contraband came from, and where it is now.
At the time of her resignation from the $80,000-a-year position on Monday, Dash had been with the Correction Department for 10 years. She’s lost most of her pension because of her early resignation.
She was arrested in January for smuggling a tattoo gun into jail for a female inmate lover, Robin Hamilton, who was going to change a marking that tied her to a series of robberies, court records show.
A judge had ordered Hamilton’s ERICKA tattoo be photographed and used as evidence in her pending trial.
An investigation revealed that Dash had bought the tattoo removal gun on Amazon, authorities said.
Jail officials took away Dash’s badge and gun and placed her on modified duty. But she remained on the payroll following a brief suspension, as per union rules.
The Department of Correction declined to comment on the video.
“The vast majority of Department of Correction staff perform their duties with the highest level of integrity and Commissioner (Joseph) Ponte has zero tolerance for those who don’t,” the department said in a statement.
Dash was not immediately available to comment. Her lawyer on Thursday said he was unable to tell it was her in the video.
