In a move that looks set to ignite the MSM and Social Media in a blaze of self-righteous fury, President Trump has suspended the expedited H-1B visa service for up to six months. The controversial visa that is designed to bring in high-skilled workers to fill a gap in the U.S job market has faced a lot of criticism in recent month.
The purpose of the H-1B visa has traditionally been to help companies fill roles that otherwise couldn’t be filled, but as reported in the Daily Caller:
The stated purpose of the H-1b program is to allow companies to temporarily import high-skilled workers when they can’t find American workers willing or able to do the job, but critics contend its true purpose is to help big businesses cut costs by importing less expensive workers. In the past several years, Disney, Southern California Edison, Fossil Group and others have together fired hundreds of American tech workers and forced them to train their foreign replacements, many of whom were flown in specifically to take their jobs.
Voices on all sides of the debate see the value in bringing in high-skilled workers to enable companies to carry out their work, but abuses of the system that mean local workers are forced out in favour of lower paid replacements is NOT the purpose of the visa.
The Obama administration carried out an investigation into H-1B abuse in 2015, but no “substantive changes” have been made. Many are looking to President Trump’s reform as the first stepping stone in protecting U.S worker’s rights properly.
