In another controversial move, President Trump has scrapped the Obama administration order that forces taxpayer-funded schools to allow transgender students to use the bathrooms and locker rooms of their choice. While the original policy was welcomed by many, the consequences for young girls and their discomfort of being in a room with an anatomical male, have started to gain notice.
As reported in the Daily Caller:
The Obama administration guidance, sent in May 2016, instructed public school districts across the country to allow transgender students to choose bathrooms and shower stalls consistent with their gender identity, not their biological features.
“A school’s failure to treat students consistent with their gender identity may create or contribute to a hostile environment in violation of Title IX,” the guidance said, in reference to the 1972 federal law banning discrimination on the basis of biological sex in education.
The Trump administration with the cooperation of the Department of Justice and the Department of Education, on Wednesday issued guidance of the repeal of the Obama order. The order will be withdrawn until such time as the administration have “further and more completely consider(ed)”
Transgender Rights Activists are upset by the decision. Several small protests took place outside the White House. Commentators on social media (both for and against) have suggested that as the decision on use of bathrooms is now a State issue, perhaps they should consider moving their protests to a more local level to be more effective.
