Devin Brown, 24, has been accused of knocking down a New York City woman with just one punch. The woman was 61, and sustained injuries that have her in the hospital with damage to her brain.
Brown, upon arriving in court, told the judge that he hit the woman, because she was ‘trying to rob him’.
After the initial excuse, Brown finally admitted that he had also taken a Xanex and drinking alcohol.
The Daily Mail reports:
But according to court papers, Devin – who was arraigned on Wednesday at Manhattan Supreme Court – shouted at cops that apprehended him soon after the attack: ‘That b**** robbed me first.’
According to the New York Post, he added: ‘What’s this about? You guys are acting like I killed somebody’.
He has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder, attempted robbery and assault charges.
Assistant District Attorney Alissa Marque said the victim was still in hospital, adding that her vocal cords are ‘severely damaged’ and she ‘cannot speak and eat without a feeding tube’.
But Lorin Nathan, for the defense, said there was ‘substantial’ intoxication involved in the incident.
In addition to telling the judge that the elderly woman tried to rob him, he also said that, since he has three sisters, he ‘would never lay [his] hands on a lady’.
Brown is awaiting the sentencing, and it is likely he will be behind bars for a long time.
