A House of Representatives seat vacated by new CIA director Mike Pompeo will stay in Republican hands after Kansas state treasurer Ron Estes pulled off a close win in Tuesday’s special election in the Sunflower State.
Estes stood with 52% of the vote when the Associated Press called the race with 88% reporting. His opponent, James Thompson, collected 46% of the tally.
The margin-of-victory is much smaller than Trump’s 27 point win in the same district (4th) in November. Pompeo also won by a wide margin in his re-election campaign.
But Thompson, an Armed Forces veteran, made it a contest. Estes ran what many observers say was a lazy campaign, less energetic than Thompson’s hard-charging grassroots effort.
