A 33-year-old special education teacher has blamed her drug habit for sleeping with one of her students.
Stephanie Amato was a teacher at the Ethan Allen Elementary School in Philadelphia. Allegations surfaced that Amato had a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old student who was in one of her classes.
According to philly.com the former special-ed teacher was sentenced to a prison term of between eleven months to 23 months. In addition, she will have to register as a sex offender.
Amato had worked for six years in the Philadelphia School District. She blamed her use of drugs as the reason that she engaged in the sexual relationship with her student. Amato told the court, ““I truly feel that I do not believe this would have occurred if it were not for drugs.”
Her attorney, Trevan Borum told the court that his client had started using drugs in 2010 and at the time of her arrest was snorting heroin every day. She attempted inpatient drug treatment in 2013 and 2014 but relapsed both times.
Amato, who is the mother of a seven-month-old child appealed to the court for probation so that she could take care of her son, but the court felt that her crimes required some time in jail.
