Phony “outrage” activists on Facebook should quit guilt-tripping Americans and engage in real activism by convincing others to donate money, writes David Williams, president of the Taxpayers’ Protection Alliance in an editorial for The Daily Caller.
Williams focuses on the recent anger on social media over the Federal government defunding its annual handouts to Corporation for Public Broadcasting and National Public Radio. Instead of using Big Bird and Elmo videos to persuade voters to vote in tax-happy politicians, argues Williams, liberals should campaign for donations to the cause.
“Real activism consists of citizens persuading fellow citizens to pitch in for a cause, not whining and changing a profile picture,” reads the editorial. “Around 100 million Facebook users are liberal. That means (to save PBS’s funding) each liberal Facebook user would only have to donate less than $5.”
Finally, Williams makes an excellent point – that it was the private sector, not the government which saved Big Bird when HBO attempted to absorb Sesame Street into its programming.
