University of Washington, Tacoma’s Writing Center has promised to cut down on injustice in its academic work by not grading for grammar or spelling, citing that these give some students privilege over others.
According to the Daily Caller, a poster stating their new stance on “Academic Excellence” was posted in the University’s Writing Center.
Yes, that’s right. A writing center will no longer teach proper writing because it may be considered racist.
“We promise to emphasize the importance of rhetorical situations over grammatical ‘correctness’ in the production of texts,” announces the poster. “We promise to challenge conventional word choices and writing explanations.”
They went on to further explain here:
“Linguistic and writing research has shown clearly for many decades that there is no inherent ‘standard’ of English,” proclaims the writing center’s statement. “Language is constantly changing. These two facts make it very difficult to justify placing people in hierarchies or restricting opportunities and privileges because of the way people communicate in particular versions of English.”
A place of learning that has decided to not equip its students for the outside world is no longer a place of learning. Students who do not write correctly will be turned down for almost every job (other than those perhaps in the fast food industry). The University of Washington is cheating their students of a future in the name of PC culture and should rightly be ashamed of sacrificing a generation of students on its altar.
