It’s been absolute horror for the people of the northern Mexico border state of Tamaulipas. In a mass prison escape, 29 make inmates literally tunneled their way out of a local prison.
One of the escaped prisoners decided to do a carjacking on a passing motorist in an effort to make a clean getaway. The victim was shot to death in the state capital, Ciudad Victoria.
So far, according to a Tamaulipas state security spokesman, 12 of the 29 prison escapees have already been caught.
Thursday, Spokesman Luis Alberto Rodriguez said the prisoners dug a tunnel to get out of the jail. It was about 40 yards long and 5 yards deep.
Rodriguez said the tunnel was hidden in a hut that inmates had illegally constructed in a part of the prison they essentially controlled.
Overcrowding, corruption and inmate control of prison areas have been persistent problems in Mexican prisons.
