7 crew members of the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Fitzgerald are missing and 1 man is confirmed injured after the ship collided with a merchant ship off the coast of Japan, the Associated Press is reporting.
Footage from NHK shows heavy damage to the Navy ship, along with a person in a stretcher being lifted into a rescue helicopter.
The Navy’s 7th Fleet has indicated that it worked with the Japanese Coast Guard to conduct the medical evacuation, and cautions that there are no reported deaths at this time.
The USS Fitzgerald ran into a merchant ship 56 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka, a city to the south of Tokyo on which a United States Naval base is located.
