A cargo ship connected to Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell has been found with around 90 pounds of cocaine. The ship was stopped and searched by Colombian Coast Guard before departing from Colombia. What makes the find even more interesting is that the Senator is a well known staunch prohibitionist.
The Cocaine was found on the Ping May, a vessel operated by a company owned by the senator’s in-laws- Foremost Maritime Corporation. Since 1980, the Chao family has been funding the Senator. In 2008, McConnell received a gift worth somewhere between 5 and 25 million dollars that made him one of the richest senators in the U.S.
Republican Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has a reputation of being both one of the most wealthy United States Senators and also one who supports the with the strictest drug policies.
McConnell obtained this wealth partly due to his wife and her family. According to reports today, however, that business may mean bad news for McConnell.
McConnell sponsored “The Enhanced Marijuana Penalties Act”, a bill whose purpose is to increase mandatory minimum sentencing for people caught with marijuana.
The war on drugs in the United States sounds so great on paper. Drugs=bad, removal of drugs=good. However, many politicians today are using catch phrases like this, and others, stringing words together that sound good as a front for whatever agenda they decide to push. Obviously, I doubt that McConnell is actually out hissing at passing pedestrians, peddling narcotics. However, if he were really as anti-drugs as he says he is, he wouldn’t have any affiliation with any company that transports them.
