President Donald Trump believes he and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have something very specific in common – both have been subject to illegal surveillance by the Obama administration.
Trump made a telling remark during a press conference with Merkel at the White House on Friday. When a reporter from Germany asked the President about his feud with Obama, Trump turned to Merkel and said, “As far as wiretapping, at least we have something in common.”
The President was referring to a 2013 scandal that occurred when the German news magazine Der Spiegel published a scoop that claimed President Barack Obama had ordered or authorized U.S. Federal intelligence agencies to tap Merkel’s phone over a 3 year period.
Kaitlan Collins of The Daily Caller recounts that an “angry” Merkel placed a call to Obama upon reading the allegations, which she said were “totally unacceptable” if accurate.
