Firefighters, emergency crews, and security agencies have been working relentlessly through the Wednesday night to battle a massive fire which engulfed a 24-storey Grenfell Tower housing at least 120 apartments.
The fire began shortly after 1.15am and had left at least 30 injured, while the number of those trapped remains unclear. According to witnesses, people were heard screaming for help as others jumped from the tower in Lancaster West Estate in Kensington.
“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are working extremely hard in very difficult conditions to tackle this fire. This is a large and very serious incident, and we have deployed numerous resources and specialist appliances,” Assistant Commissioner Dan Daly said.
Around 200 firefighters and 40 fire trucks have been working feverishly and successfully extinguished the fire at 5 a.m., although the building is still smoldering.
