House Minority Leader, Nancy Pelosi, has stated that one of the greatest threats to our national security is the Department of Defense NOT paying funds to assist Transgendered people to receive surgery.
It is unclear in what way the restriction of funds (the DoD does provide funds for psychological counseling) for “gender re-assignment surgery” would result in a National Security emergency is unclear. Out of the whole US population, only 0.6% of people identify as Transgendered; how many of those are in the military is not clear. But funds for the DoD are not inexhaustible.
Choices have to be made. Would we rather pay for weapons, training and the security of soldiers, or would we rather pay for what many believe to be an unnecessary surgery?
Critics of this type of spending have suggested that people would enroll in the military ONLY to access these allowances. Advocates of the funding suggest that it would not impact operational readiness.
As reported in the Daily Caller:
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi slammed Republicans for trying to “rip away” health care for transgender service members.
In a statement Thursday, Pelosi said the “disgusting” attempt to restrict funds from being used to provide gender transition treatments is “unprecedented, unacceptable and undermines our national security.”
“Republicans should be ashamed: instead of protecting the men and women who risk their lives to defend our freedoms, they are fighting to rip away the health care of thousands of brave service members,” Pelosi said in a statement. “This cowardly Republican amendment targeting transgender men and women in uniform effectively bans these patriotic Americans from serving their country.”
