Rand Paul has taken CNN to task not only for their support for the Paris Climate Accord but also for their opposition to Trump’s withdrawal from it. He told Anderson Cooper that it damaged American jobs and economy and actually does very little for environmental protection as other countries would still be polluting.
The Paris agreement does not actually force any country to do anything other than set a target and file a report on whether or not they have reached that target. There are no penalties for not reaching the target, nor are their penalties for a country that ends up increasing its carbon output. It is nothing but international virtue signaling.
All countries can sign up to it, but that doesn’t mean any of them will actually do anything. They can, of course, try to mock Donald Trump for not signing up, but at least Trump is standing up to the Globalist lobby and not being a coward in the face of pressure. The agreement achieves exactly Zero. Trump was right to withdraw.
As reported in the Daily Caller:
Paul told CNN host Anderson Cooper that Trump is right to pull out of the deal because other countries aren’t holding up their end of the bargain.
“China doesn’t have to play by the same rules,” Paul said of the agreement. “The debate should be over whether [the Paris accord] is fair. Is it fair for China to keep polluting at alarming rates and for us to be cutting back on carbon and China has to do nothing?”
“Is it fair that Russia gets to increase their carbon output 50 percent?” he asked rhetorically.
