Megan Caterino is the owner of a pot-bellied pig named Maybelle. While the pig was the woman’s companian, she clearly couldn’t resist feeding her favorite pet. The problem is that Maybelle has now gotten too fat to stand up.
The pig currently weighs 196lbs, which is twice as much as usual. She had to be carried out of the house by authorities. Animal response units say that the pig could no longer stand, had diabetes, and was most likely blind.
Caterino, the owner, is now facing animal cruelty charges.
The Daily Mail reports:
An animal owner has been charged after overfeeding her potbellied pig so much that she could no longer stand up.
Unfortunate Maybelle currently weighs in at 196 pounds, which is twice what she should weigh.
She was carried on a backboard from the home of Megan Caterino, who faces prosecution for animal cruelty.
The pig has now been put on a diet to bring her back to a regular size amid serious concerns about her health, CBS reports.
Anna Chaletzky, of the Animal Rescue League, told WTOL: ‘She’s so overweight that she can’t see.’
She is now being looked after by the Animal Rescue League of Boston.
Law enforcement officer Darleen Wood said: ‘It’s not healthy for an animal to be malnourished, nor is it good to be obese, even a pig.’
It is the third time a pig has been taken from Caterino’s home, the ARL has said.
Maybelle now faces months of eating fruit and exercise in order to get her back to a healthy weight.
