In a hilariously dramatic mistake last night, it turned out the oscars producers made a mistake and announced La La Land as the winner for best picture, when it turned out Moonlight really had won and had to be called up to accept the award… after an acceptance speech had been made.
Moonlight won three awards last night. It won for Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali and Best Adapted Screenplay for Barry Jenkins and Tarrell Alvin McCrary. Moonlight is an independent film about a coming-of-age story featuring a young black man in Miami.
When La La Land was announced the winner the entire cast came on stage and began to tearfully accept their award, until an oscars producer ran up there to fix the mistake. Once La La Land producer Justin Horowitz had opened the envelope he announced the winner. “There’s a mistake. Moonlight, you guys won the Best Picture. This is not a joke.”
