Oregon has long been known as a liberal stronghold, but now the state has passed a bill that will force gun owners to surrender their weapons upon request of a law enforcement officer.
The bill, called SB719, is based on a 2014 California law and allows a judge issue an es parte ruling which would force a gun owner to hand over their weapon, without requiring that the gun owner be present for that part of the court proceedings. It would effectively allow family members, household members of law enforcement to take away Second Amendment rights without giving the gun owner a chance to defend themselves or dispute the case.
The bill includes an “Extreme Risk Protection Order,” which states that, “Requires court to order respondent to surrender deadly weapons and concealed handgun license within 24 hours of service of initial order, and immediately upon service of continued or renewed order. Provides for law enforcement officer serving order to request immediate surrender of deadly weapons and concealed handgun license and authorizes law enforcement officer to take possession of surrendered items.”

Why is this extremely troubling?
So this means the government or a family member can decide to allege things make a ruling against you and you aren’t even given the opportunity to defend yourself or protect your rights.
