Chelsea (formerly Bradley) Manning, the soldier who leaked hundreds of thousands of official documents to Wikileaks is about to be released from prison. One of Obama’s final acts was to commute manning’s sentence of 35 years. The truly disgraceful aspect of this is that Manning will continue to receive benefits and health care upon release.
Manning not only betrayed the US, he endangered thousands of lives and brought disrepute to the military. At a time when thousands of servicemen and women ar homeless, without access to any benefits, why should he get special treatment?
It is clearly political. If Manning had not begun transitioning his gender, he would still be serving his sentence. Where were the Presidential pardons for Snowden and Assange? Perhaps if they became part of a minority group, they would get benefits, too?
As reported in the Daily Caller:
Manning, who is widely known for leaking hundreds of thousands of national security documents to WikiLeaks in 2010, will leave Fort Leavenworth on May 17 and be entitled to health care, USA Today reports.
Although Manning initially entered prison as a man named Bradley, he later transitioned to a woman and adopted the name Chelsea in 2013. He attempted suicide multiple times while in confinement and complained of abuse like “routinely forced haircuts.” In 2016, Manning engaged in a hunger strike until the government agreed to provide gender transition treatment.
As one of his last moves before leaving the White House, President Barack Obama commuted Manning’s 35-year sentence, which enraged President-elect Donald Trump.
