This evening, President Trump successfully gambled by attacking a Syrian airbase from which a sick and evil chemical attack was launched against children.
But in his own way, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell might have launched an equally effective strike at home.
This morning, McConnell triggered the “nuclear option” ensuring Judge Neil Gorsuch’s confirmation to succeed late Justice Scalia on the Supreme Court.
A cloture vote, or a vote to end debate and move the nomination, requires the support of 60 senators. Democrats marshaled enough support to sustain a filibuster of Gorsuch by a margin of 45-55.
The Kentucky senator objected to the filibuster as a point of order, and appealed the presiding officer, triggering a vote. A majority of 52-48 senators ratified his move, and broke the filibuster.
The conservative Gorsuch’s path to the SCOTUS is now cleared.
