A shocking video has been going viral on Facebook and Twitter, showing a Texas man, 49-year-old Keith Dean, attacking an officer while high on drugs and being arrested.
Dean turned around and slapped the officer while the officer was attempting to subdue him. Dean had previously ingested an unknown variety of drugs and was naked in the street when police approached him.
The officer was commended on the way he managed to subdue the man without resorting to horrible physical violence, or shooting him.
In the clip, 49-year-old Keith Dean can be seen completely nude holding a stolen can of pesticide spray. Dean, who had reportedly been spraying people on a train with the pesticide, is seen struggling with a responding police officer. The officer grabs the spray out of Dean’s hand – prompting him to slap him in the face.
The officer then stuns Dean with a taser two times, causing him to fall to the ground.
“That was bad. That was bad. It was shocking to see. It was more shocking that he didn’t get killed or shot,” Benjamin Marquina, who filmed the clip, told KPRC. Marquina praised the officer for how he handled the situation.
“He didn’t escalate it. He could have escalated it into something worse than just a Taser. And that’s a good thing for everyone else to see how it should be handled,” he said.
Marquina said he began filming after spotting Dean naked in the train.
“I heard a commotion and went outside and then I saw the naked man inside the train,” he said.
Dean reportedly told officers that he had been smoking marijuana, though a police department spokesperson rejected the notion that the drug would have caused him to do what he did.
“We commend these two officers for their actions in bringing a volatile situation to a safe conclusion. The male clearly struck our officer, who in turn used sound judgement in holding his composure and gaining control of the scene …. thanks to assistance from his partner,” Houston Police Department Assistant Chief Troy Finner said in a statement.
Dean is a Kansas native currently residing in Texas, where he is homeless.
He was arrested and is being charged with two counts of bodily harm towards an officer.
