In Australia, a Muslim woman who refused to remove her headscarf or stand before the judge has been taught a lesson in Western law: her behavior won’t be tolerated.
Moutia Elzahed – whose husband is convicted ISIS fighter and recruiter Hamdi Alqudsi – was actually in court because SHE was suing the commonwealth of Australia, for an alleged assault that happened when their counterterrorism units raided their apartment in 2014. She was there to sue the Australian government.
Despite her being there to sue the government, she refused to stand for the judge when he came in. The judge asker her attorney why and the attorney answered that he was not happy with her either, but she refused to stand because “she is a Muslim” and she refuses to stand for anyone but Allah.
Well, Judge Audrey Balla wasn’t going to take that. His courtroom, his rules. So he told Elzahed that for every time she refused to stand as a separate act of disrespecting the court.
Each count of disrespecting the court comes with a 14-day jail sentence and $1,000 fine.
He also refused to hear her testimony if she kept her full-face veil on, which she did.
At least Australia is standing up for themselves… unlike this Walmart in Michigan that made headlines after they allowed a Muslim employee to be above the rules, effectively disrespecting a decorated veteran.
AmericaNow has more:
Judge Audrey Balla said she would consider each time Elzahed refused to stand as a separate count of disrespecting the court. The judge also said she would not hear the woman’s testimony if she were wearing a full face veil.
The new law of disrespecting the court went into effect in Australia in September, and each count carries a maximum 14-day jail sentence and a $1,000 fine.
The story quickly went viral, with many questioning the woman’s decision.
“Lock her up for contempt and all that covering will be removed during lock up then she can come back to court in an orange jump suit,” one reader wrote on Newsiosity’s Facebook page.
“Lock her up in solitary. Let’s be kind and feed her normal jail food. No special halal food. It’s her choice as to if she eats or not. Let her sit till she plans to follow the laws. We got to get this through there heads that they have to follow the laws of the land,” another added.
