Mohamad Bazzi, a Muslim man in Michigan, has filed the paperwork to start a lawsuit against the national chain, Little Caesars, for serving him pepperoni that was made from pork. Pepperoni is usually pork. The box it came in, however, said it was halal suitable. Bazzi says after he ate the pepperoni, he became sick. That was when he realized that the pepperoni was not made from halal meat.
Bazzi even used to work in a pizza place, and admits that he knows pepperoni is usually made with pork. Since the restaurant does claim it serves halal, he assumed that their pepperoni would be halal, and made with another meat.
The Daily Mail reports:
The lawsuit stated the first incident happened on March 20 and that Bazzi and his wife were halfway through eating the pizza when they realized it was not halal, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Bazzi claims he knew the pepperoni was pork because he used to work in a pizza shop and knows the difference.
He also said his wife was a Catholic who converted to Islam and could taste that it was pork.
They filed a police report three days later, according to the lawsuit.
The second incident happened on Wednesday, which prompted them to file a lawsuit the following day.
Bazzi’s attorney Majed Moughni said he rushed to file the lawsuit on Thursday – the eve of Ramadan – so other Muslims wouldn’t mistakenly eat pork from the restaurant chain during the holiday.
He said eating pork for a Muslim was ‘one of the worst sins you can do’.
The lawsuit, which seeks class-action status, alleges breach of contract on Little Caesars’ part, negligent misrepresentation, unjust enrichment and fraud.
