Democrat Maxine Waters who has frequented the news with her outbursts, had another meltdown when she refused to be at the joint session of congress while President Trump speaks.
She went publicly on MSNBC to say, “This is ceremonial. And in this ceremony people lie. They smile. They shake hands. They hug each other. They honor the president. I’m not about any of that. I’m prepared to interact with the president only when he puts up his budget and his agenda that I’m going to have to fight. So let’s not talk about the ceremony in relationship to, you know, public policy, real public policy. I don’t choose to go. I don’t choose to go. I don’t choose to honor him. I’ve said that. And I won’t be a part of the ceremony. And that’s that.”
Justice Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, and liberal favorite Ruth Bader Ginsburg also sat out the speech as a protest.

President Donald Trump is addressing a joint session of Congress and the nation today starting at 9 p.m. Eastern. Although many Democrats boycotted his inauguration, the number of Democrats who plan not to attend his speech tonight is much shorter. Some, however, are finding more creative ways to show their dissent.
However, it’s not just Democrats who plan to skip out on Trump’s speech. Here’s the list of everyone who’s said they plan to skip Trump’s speech tonight and not attend:
- Rep. Maxine Waters, D-California – She’s the ranking member of the House Financial Services Committee. She told House Democrats that she plans not to attend because she doesn’t think she can control herself, ABC News reported.
- Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will not be attending, New York Daily News reported.
- Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito won’t attend, New York Daily News reported. He stopped attending these speeches during Obama’s administration, after his criticism of Citizen’s United.
- Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas won’t attend, New York Daily News reported. He hasn’t attended since Obama’s 2009 address. He says the speeches are too partisan.
House Democrats have said that by and large, they plan to be civil and on their best behavior. This would be in contrast to 2009, when Rep. Joe Wilson, a Republican, caused an outburst during then President Barack Obama’s first address to a joint session of Congress. He yelled out “You lie!” during Obama’s speech.
Instead, House Democrats said that some of them plan to wear white to show their commitment to women’s rights. Others plan to bring immigrants with them as guests for the speech. Some said they won’t applaud and won’t shake hands with Trump.
