Then, a concerned parents called in with a tip, and the investigation showed that Whitaker had multiple sexual encounters with two high school boys.
Whitaker was found to have made contact with at least two boys, one 16, the other 18, after a parents saw the teacher take one of the students somewhere private, which she thought was weird behavior. Police believe there are other victims that have not yet come forward.
The Daily Mail reports:
Whitaker, who lives in Deeth with her husband and two children – a son and daughter – has taught fourth grade at Wells Elementary School and has been with the district for 11 years.
Elko County School District Superintended Jeff Zander said in a statement that Whitaker has been placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation into the allegations.
Whitaker was released from jail on Tuesday after posting $160,000 bail.
According to the sheriff’s office, in October 2016 they were contacted by a parent at Wells Combined School saying that Whitaker was seen behind closed classroom doors with a student, which was deemed inappropriate.
Supp said that the agency’s investigation, which involved surveillance, has revealed that Whitaker made contact with the male high school students on social media in violation of the school’s district’s policy prohibiting online communications between students and staff.
Whitaker’s suspected sexual encounters with the teenage boys occurred over the course of two years, including on school grounds, according to the authorities.
Supp said they believe there might be more victims out there, and he urged anyone with relevant information to come forward.
