Matias Ferreira, a former US Marine corps lance corporal who had both legs below the knee amputated when he stepped on a hidden improvised explosive device in Afghanistan in 2011, just graduated from the Suffolk County Police Department Academy Friday, and he’s believed to be the first fully active duty double amputee in the country.
The 28-year-old graduated after 29 weeks of training. Just like any other recruit, the 6-foot-1 and 215-poinds enthusiast passed all the physical training as well as other requirements. When he took an exam to become a policeman, he scored a perfect score of 100, and was elected class President following the impressive performance.
“I just really want to be able to help people. I want to be involved in the community, and the police department definitely allows you to do that.”
In a public statement, Police Commissioner Timothy Sini said,
“He has served this great country with outstanding distinction, and will now serve and protect the residents of Suffolk County.”
Ferreira has previously made two comments about his rather distinctive condition.
