A gunman, identified as James T. Hodgkinson, 66, opened fire at a Congressional baseball practice on Wednesday was confirmed dead.
President Trump said the man was killed in a shootout with police after he shot and wounded House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.). Four others, including two policemen, were also wounded.
Scalise underwent surgery and is expected to recover.
The Washington Post offered this profile of the shooter, James Hodgkinson that indicated he was a Trump hater.
As people offered prayers for the victims, a profile began to emerge of Hodgkinson, a onetime home inspector. A Facebook page believed to be Hodgkinson’s includes pictures of Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders and rhetoric against President Trump, including a post that reads: “Trump is a Traitor. Trump Has Destroyed Our Democracy. It’s Time to Destroy Trump & Co.”

The President spoke with Scalise’s wife and offered his full support to the Congressman’s family. President Trump then offered these remarks:
Many lives would have been lost if not for the heroic actions of the two Capitol Police officers who took down the gunman despite sustaining gunshot wounds during a very, very brutal assault.
