Roger Ailes, who built Fox News into a television powerhouse, died today according to a report in The New York Times.
For two decades, Roger Ailes was the dominant force in conservative news coverage and created the most watched news network on television.
No immediate cause of death was given, but Mr. Ailes has had a tough year after unproven allegations of sexual harassment caused the Murdoch family, which owns Fox News, to fire Mr. Ailes.
As the Times reported:
Fair and balanced” was Mr. Ailes’s defining phrase for Fox News, along with another slogan: “We report. You decide.” Though routinely mocked by liberal critics, who regarded the network as decidedly unfair and imbalanced, those words amounted to an article of faith for Mr. Ailes.
Ailes had a “take no prisoners” approach when it came to covering the news. He may have had his faults, but there was no doubt he was the man who helped move ‘fair and balanced’ news coverage out of the biased hands of liberal CNN.
