A 27-year old man groped a 13-year-old girl on an airplane flight into Portland Oregon last June.
However, instead of spending the years in jail he deserved, his lawyer managed to negotiate a 14-month sentence which included credit for eleven months already served.
He blamed his behavior on an addiction to opiates and alcohol. According to OregonLive, he made a statement to the court expressing remorse.
I truly am sorry for what took place. There’s no … no apology that will make up for what has happened, what I have done. I’m willing to take full responsibility,” Camp told U.S. District Judge Michael W. Mosman during his sentencing in federal court Thursday. “I truly am sorry and given the chance, I will do whatever it takes to stay clean and sober.”
Chad Camp will also have to register as a sex offender for 15 years.
The girl and her family moved out of state, largely due to the traumatic experience. Many feel that the sentence was much too light for Camp given the harm he inflicted.
