Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont is now saying that he will not join the push to filibuster Neil Gorsuch’s nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court, according to a report in The Daily Caller.
Following the conclusion of the Judge’s confirmation hearings, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced that Democrats in the Senate would stage a filibuster. Because Senate rules require 60 votes to close a floor debate, a group of 41 senators can filibuster by preventing the chamber from closing debate.
Leahy believes that the filibuster strategy “hurts everybody.”
The senator continued by saying he has felt “very reluctant” to see Senate Democrats resort to what he calls the “nuclear” option.
