Hank Williams, Jr is returning to Monday Night Football this fall.
When Monday Night Football began airing in 1989, the opening song, “All My Rowdy Friends,” was sung by Hank Williams, Jr.
That continued to be the signature opening of the popular broadcast until 2011 when ESPN decided to pull the song after Williams made some comments about then President Barack Obama that ESPN felt were politically incorrect.
I think it’s a return to our past in that it’s such an iconic song associated with football. It was the original. It belongs to Monday Night Football. It really is about returning to what fans know. It’s a Monday night party, and that’s what we’re all hoping to get back to.
Mr. Williams made some controversial comments about Obama golfing with House Speaker John Boehner and called Obama and Joe Biden “the enemy.”
I hope there will be some happy people on Monday night again. It feels natural, fulfilling and satisfying at this point when you’ve kind of done it all.
