Tensions are high as the Brexit debate takes a turn for the unexpected. With Spain threatening the annexing of Britain’s territory, Gibraltar, many people are talking about what happened last time another country tried to take some British territory…The Falklands War.
As reported in the Daily Caller:
Gibraltar is internationally recognized as a British overseas territory, but Spain has contested the Brits’ legal claim to the region for hundreds of years.
“Thirty-five years ago this week, another woman PM sent a task force halfway across the world to defend the freedom of another small group of British people against another Spanish-speaking country,” Howard, who led the Conservatives between 2003 and 2005, told Sky News Sunday. “I’m absolutely certain that our current prime minister would show the same resolve in standing by the people of Gibraltar.”
This is surely a tactic by the Spanish to claim Gibraltar under the cover of the EU UK negotiations. Hoping that Britain will not act militarily whilst in the negotiating process. But they are forgetting that Margret Thatcher (former UK Prime Minister) built her reputation by being tough and taking on the Argentinians when they tried to claim the Falkland Islands in 1982.
One thing is for sure, while politicians may call for calm and compromise, the British people will almost Certainly back the PM if she chooses to use a show of force.
