One of the more bizarre stories of the cold war was recently revealed when it was reported that the CIA implanted microphones on cats to spy on the Russians.
According to an article in The SUN, the project was named “Project Acoustic Kitty,” and the CIA spent at least $12 million to develop the technology.
The program was developed over a five-year period in the 1960’s and was revealed in a recent WikiLeaks document.
The tests ran into problems as described in The Sun article.
A cat’s tail was used as an antenna, and a wire traveled all the way up its spine connecting to a microphone in its ear, while a battery was housed in its chest. But on its first test, its CIA handlers watched on in horror as their robo-kitty was run over and killed just seconds into the mission.
After that failed first test the CIA gave up on the project and moved onto other more reliable methods of eavesdropping.
