The Battle of Liberty Monument that has stood in New Orleans for years and years that commemorates the white soldiers that fought and died for their belief, has been removed by city officials under the cover of darkness. So unpopular is the move, that not only did they wait until it was gone midnight, but construction workers wore face masks to protect their identities.
This was only the first o first of four monuments that are set to be removed on ideological grounds by the New Orleans Mayor. And whilst many in local government support the move, it has left some uncomfortable.
When we try to erase history or rewrite the past, not only are we denying the truth of that time, but we are also removing the lessons of history from our minds. And if a lesson is gone, we are doomed to make the mistakes again.
As reported in the Daily Caller:
A crew arrived around 1:25 a.m. to pull down the Liberty Monument, a tribute to whites who fought against an integrated post-Civil War government in New Orleans. The stone obelisk is the first of four monuments slated to be removed in the coming months, Fox News reported.
New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu, who has spearheaded the controversial campaign to tear down the monuments, said the Liberty Monument had no place in a majority black city because it was erected to “revere white supremacy.”
“If there was ever a statue that needed to be taken down, it’s that one,” he said Sunday.
