A gruesome terrorist attack in Syria’s capital Damascus has resulted in a difficult to digest scene, with 32 people dead and 45 others wounded. Right after another terrorist attack happened at a nearby restaurant also killing a number of people.
No group has so far taken responsibility for the act, but there are pending investigations. This is a second wave of attacks after last week, when 74 people were killed in bombings across the city.
President Trump talked about fighting ISIS and terrorism during his campaign, but so far it has not come into congressional play, with the federal government focused on ending Obamacare and building the wall.
The Daily Mail reports:
In the latest suicide explosion, a man wearing a military uniform and carrying a shotgun and grenades arrived at the entrance to the court just after 1pm today, Damascus police chief Mohammad Kheir Ismail told state TV.
The guards stopped the man and asked to search him.
At that point, the man threw himself inside the building and detonated his explosives.
Syria’s attorney general Ahmad al-Sayed said: ‘This is a dirty action as people who enter the palace are innocent.’
An AFP correspondent at the scene in the Hamidiyeh neighbourhood said security forces had cordoned off the area and roads leading to it were blocked as ambulances and firefighters rushed to the building.
A lawyer in the building said: ‘We were terrified because the sound of the explosion was enormous.
‘We took refuge in the library which is on a higher floor. It was a bloody scene.’
State television broadcast scenes from the building showing blood smeared on the floor of the lobby but also splattered across its ceiling.
It interviewed a man receiving treatment with a bandage over his eye who said the attacker was wearing a military jacket.
‘He had his hands up and screamed ‘God is greatest’ and then the blast happened,’ he told state television.
‘I fell to the ground and blood came out of my eye.’
A short time later, a second blast rocked the city’s Rabweh area. In that attack, the suicide bomber blew himself up in a restaurant.
The Ikhbariyeh TV channel said the attacker was being chased by security agents when he rushed into a restaurant and detonated his explosives’ vest. There was no immediate claim for that attack either.
