According to a report in The Washington Post, the Germans are ‘perplexed’ when Donald Trump refused to back down from his statements made last week.
The German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, had apparently expected Trump to be another President like Barack Obama, who seemed to stand in awe of the Europeans. Instead, Trump made it clear that he puts American interests ahead of those of Germany.
There are three major issues dividing Germany and the U.S:
- The Paris Climate Change Agreement that Trump has refused to commit to.
- The massive trade deficit between Germany and the U.S.
- Germany’s refusal to support Trump’s demand that European countries pay their fair share of the costs of NATO.
Merkel escalated her differences with Trump when she made statements over the weekend that challenged America’s foreign policy.
Merkel must have thought that Trump would back down and listen to the Europeans, who have felt for generations that they are superior to the Americans.
Instead, the President warned Germany that they are going to have to do their fair share.
We have a MASSIVE trade deficit with Germany, plus they pay FAR LESS than they should on NATO & military. Very bad for U.S. This will change

Fox News summarized a warning to Mrs. Merkel of the dangers of her pushing Mr. Trump too far.
You might not like Mr. Trump, Frau Merkel. He is rude and outspoken and typically, in your view, American. But remember: Russia is to your east. Vladimir Putin is not impressed with the paltry defense force Europe could put together if it did not have the United States behind it.
