Dr. Drew has been very vocal about his belief that George Michael did not die from natural causes. And, he’s adamant that the coroner report is inaccurate.
The celebrity doctor and reality TV personality spoke to TMZ about his feelings. He says the coroner’s report shows that there are multiple signs that point to the pop star’s drug use being a contributing factor to his health issues. Because of this, he believes the report isn’t reliable.
Drew claims that this is inconsistent with the pathologist reports that George Micheal had a congestive heart myopathy. This is an intrinsic disease that effects the heart muscle. However, it’s one that should not exist in a 53-year-old man. So, for it to exist, “that is not a natural thing.”
NY Daily News continues:
He believes the singer died from a “natural history” of heart disease, but that’s not the same thing as dying of natural causes.
“The pathologist said natural causes and then mentions non-natural causes of death. A natural cause of death is aging or a cardiac event,” he explained.
On Monday, senior coroner Darren Salter reported that Michael had dilated cardiomyopathy with myocarditis, a condition in which the heart is unable to pump blood efficiently. Myocarditis means the heart muscle is inflamed.
The report also said the pop icon suffered from a fatty liver.
According to the British Heart Foundation, cardiomyopathy can be inherited, but could also be caused by uncontrolled high blood pressure and excessive amounts of alcohol.
Michael was found dead in his Oxfordshire, England home on Christmas Day by his partner Fadi Fawaz. He was 53.
