A Detroit mother took the journey of her life with her son. They both took on new identities, completely changing their lives, as they transitioned together, becoming father and daughter.
In September 2015, Erica’s support for her 15-year-old son’s plans to become a woman went viral. A video was posted showing the mother giving her son, Corey Maison his very first dose of hormonal supplements.
Corey had expressed to his mother that he’d been struggling with his identity as a boy for a long time. The teen had no idea that his mother was battling the same struggles.
Erica, who is now Eric, says he now feels complete after taking his first dose of testosterone to transition into a man.
“When I was younger, I used to wish for cancer so I would have to get a mastectomy,” Eric told Tara Brown in an Australian 60 Minutes interview.
“The only regret I have is not being educated sooner about what transgenderism was, so I could do it sooner,” he added.
Corey, who once worried about whether or not her mom would accept her new life, took to Instagram to share an official photo next to Eric in a repost of National Geographic’s story on the family, “This is what trans looks like.”
“Sometimes our children lead the way. Corey, 14, socially transitioned from boy to girl in the past few years,” the post read.
“She gave her Mom, Eric(a) the courage to begin her own transition from female to male. They are moving in opposite directions, but toward their true selves.”
As for Eric’s husband, Les, nothing has changed.
Les told 60 Minutes he plans to stay committed to Eric, whom he described as “beautiful as a woman, but equally beautiful on the inside.”
Speaking to his daughter Corey, Les added, “Whatever we have to do to make this work, we will.”
