Democrat senators warned that any attempt to either not fund Planned Parenthood, or to go forward with a border wall would result in a government shutdown. The apparent plan of the Democrats is to put an end to President Trump’s border wall plan by halting funding.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said, “if Republicans insist on inserting poison pill riders such as defunding Planned Parenthood, building a border wall, or starting a deportation force, they will be shutting down the government and delivering a severe blow to our economy.”
The Democrats evidently hope to create a battle and make it impossible for the White house to pass any bill which they don’t want.
The Daily Caller reports:
“You know as well as I do the threshold for legislation is not 51,” South Carolina Republican Sen. Tim Scott told Bloomberg News Monday, implying that all 52 Senate Republicans will need to find eight Democrats to cross the aisle to move any legislation forward for a final vote.
Both political parties are able to move strategically, however. A source close to the Republican administration said that the Republicans could attach the wall funding to the bill that funds the military, making it difficult to reject. Democrats could be forced to accept such bill, for risk of losing voters over military spending.
