Authorities have arrested 32-year-old Maggie Dixon, a North Carolina mother, who had been breaking into her infant son’s emergency room and smothering him with a pillow.
Doctors noticed that the infant, who was already staying in the hospital, began to show irregular breathing patterns that doctors could not figure out.
The nurses decided to check the video footage to make sure no one was hurting the child, and were shocked at what they found.
That’s reportedly when they saw Dixon hovered over her son, attempting to smother him.
Once they realized what Dixon had done to her own child, staff at the hospital immediately called authorities, who took the disturbed mother into custody.
According to WYFF, Dixon has since been arrested and charged with attempted first-degree murder and felony child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury.
At this time, authorities have not revealed whether or not Dixon has a history of mental illness, nor have they said if she gave an explanation for her horrific actions.
Several outlets have since shared this disturbing story on Facebook, where many commenters called for Dixon to face the harshest penalty over what she has done.
Although she should be facing maximum charges, prosecutors may choose to check her for Munchausen syndrome.
The baby remains in the care of the hospital staff and workers, and may not be released for some time.
