AshLeigh Peach, 30, and her 28-year-old fiance, Johnathan Parsley have been taken into custody after a police check-in at their home revealed abused and neglected children, including a 5-year-old that weighed just 32 pounds.
Police were responding to a call in tip that suspected child abuse in the residence. When they arrived, they found that the 5-year-old boy was punished with starvation, until he weighed as much as a toddler.
The next day, child services took away the 5-year-old son. They also removed six other children from the premises.
Both parents are being charged with a felony case of child abuse.
The Daily Mail reports:
The complainant claimed a child was being starved as punishment, according to a press release from the police.
The following day, officers and child services caseworkers went to the couple’s home in 700 block of Berryman Pike and took away the five-year-old victim. Six other children were later removed from the same household.
The five-year-old was transported to Riley Children’s Hospital, where he was remained for more than a week receiving treatment for malnutrition. Medical staff reported that the child only weighed 32lbs at the time of admission, and was in the 1.9 percentile for weight of children his age.
The child was discharged after doctors deemed that he was going to make a full recovery from the starvation.
On June 7, local police, the Tipton County Sheriff’s Office and Indiana State Police served a search warrant at Peach and Parsley’s home, where they found surveillance equipment used to watch for the victim attempting to sneak food out of the kitchen, according to the press release.
Officers learned the seven children living with the couple shared two bedrooms, one of which was equipped with an audible door alarm and the other was equipped with a padlock system.
An investigation has uncovered that the alarm was used to keep the five-year-old confined to the bedroom for extended periods of time as punishment, police stated.
When police secured arrest warrants for Peach and Parsley and arrived at their home at around 3pm on Thursday to take them into custody, the man reportedly attempted to flee, but was quickly subdued.
During the apprehension, Parsley, who goes by his middle name, Mason, attempted to flee on foot, but was quickly subdued without further incident.
Police did not comment on the nature of the couple’s relationship with the five-year-old and the other children who were living with them, but AshLeigh Peach’s Facebook account is filled with photos of children at sporting events and holiday celebrations.
