Whilst speaking at the Indiana Wesleyan University Chapel, suggested that white students had “inherited a fault”. Dr. Christena Cleveland of the Duke Divinity School, was giving a talk about how Jesus “benefited from inequality” and gained power by being free and “not Roman but not Samaritan”. According to the Daily Caller, Dr. Cleveland said:
“If you’re in this room and you identify as white, then you do benefit from that,” said Dr. Cleveland. “We live in a society where white people are accommodated while non-white people are alienated.”
She explained that Jesus had these “benefits” because of his sex and nationality. She pointed out that:
“In some ways Jesus was very oppressed…but in a lot of ways, Jesus had a lot of power in his society,”
“Jesus was a man in his society and women didn’t have a lot of power”
“We talk about love…about how Jesus loved, but love cannot exist in the midst of inequality,”
Her basis for the present inequality comes from a study she cited in which resumes with different names, (some “white sounding” such as Emily and Greg and some “African-American names.” like Jamal and Lakisha), were submitted to Boston and Chicago companies. the resumes were identical in all other ways. The employers chose the candidates with the “whiter” names more.
“You’re not inherently at fault but what you have done is inherited a fault,” Dr. Cleveland told the white students in the room.”
