Ten kindergarten children in China were sent to the hospital yesterday after being poisoned and falling ill, according to Chinese authorities. The children were poisoned with schizophrenia medication – and the common factor was that their teacher had made them all lunch.
These events happened at Hongri Kindergarten in Dongguan city, People’s Daily reported.
The caretaker was arrested by police immediately, and admitted to her crime – saying she poisoned the children’s food because she didn’t get a pay raise that she had wanted.
The children all lived in the same neighborhood attending the school, and being near to the same hospital – where all the children ended up, some even fainting after the poisoning.
Surveillance footage showed the teacher adding mysterious ingredients to the children’s soup.
The Daily Mail states:
On the afternoon of March 15, several children reported signs of dizziness and some even fainted after school, Southcn.com reported.
Parents desperately sent their children to the Huangjiang Hospital for treatment.
The case was reported to police who watched surveillance footage and quickly spotted a caretaker suspiciously adding unknown ingredients into the children’s meals.
Police later retrieved a bottle of clozapine, a last-resort medication for schizophrenia, at the caretaker’s home.
The suspect, surnamed Yang, was responsible for serving meals and cleaning at the school.
Her earlier request for a pay rise was rejected by the school. She admitted that she had put her own antipsychotic medication into children’s food for revenge.
All children have now been discharged from the hospital.
Nonetheless, the incident has sparked outrage across Weibo, China’s microblogging site.
‘How could you relate a pay rise to the innocent children?’ a user asked.
‘Everyone can work at kindergarten. Such incident is difficult to avoid.’ one user noted.
‘She would be strictly punished.’ another user commented.
