Jessica Collins from Amarillo, Texas posted a picture and a story on Facebook last week that went viral.
The woman was attacked outside of her apartment when she went into her car to retrieve her cell phone charger. As she was digging around in her car, a male assailant came at her. He punched her in the face. Shocked, but thinking quickly, Collins placed her keys in between her fingers and hit him in the neck, drawing blood.
As she hit him in the neck, he actually ran away.
The Daily Mail reports:
She posted a warning on Facebook about the mugger and advised other women in Amarillo to consider using their keys as a potential self-defense weapon.
The Facebook post, which has been shared more than 100,000 times, shows the shocking injuries she suffered during the attack.
Ms Collins wrote: ‘Thank you all for sharing and please continue to do so. I am just trying to raise awareness so many women and girls these days don’t pay attention or think until it’s too late.
‘So I’m not only trying to inform people but maybe even save lives. Feel free to share share share.
‘Ladies if you are going somewhere alone always always carry your keys with one between two knuckles. It’s so important to remember your safety. Especially when everything happens so fast.
‘I realized I left my phone charger in my car. So I unlock my car and grab the cord and then step back (to shut the door) when a Hispanic male punched me in the nose.
‘Thankfully I had my keys in a defense position because I gave him a right hook and ended up getting him in the neck then he ran one way (holding his neck) and I ran the other way into my apartment building and got inside then called the police .
‘A report has been made but still. Please be careful out there. He’s is still out there somewhere and I know there are probably others like this. Feel free to share to save a life.’
Collins said that police collected the key she used to try and get DNA evidence off of it. They are hoping to find her attacker and bring him to justice, although it looks like Collins may have done a pretty good job of it herself.
Collins continues to post and remind women everywhere to pay attention and always have a self-defense plan in mind.
