Conservative Party of Canada leadership candidate Kellie Leitch (in photo below) is proposing asking Muslim immigrants, “Are women and men equal?” before allowing them to enter the country, according to a CBC report.
While even some in her own party disagree, Canadian citizens seem to be on Leitch’s side.
An internet poll by Radio Canada recently surveyed 2,513 people across Canada about immigration issues. A whopping 74% of those polled said they were favorable to the idea of vetting new immigrants with a “Canadian Values” test, asking them if women deserve equal rights under the law.
Also striking in the poll is that a majority of citizens from Quebec believe that the hijab is a symbol of women’s submission.
Liberal politicians are fighting the proposal, with Parliament member Deepak Obhrai saying that questioning Muslims about their views on women creates a “dangerous environment.”
